BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has finally broken his silence on some of Indian cricket’s most debated topics at the NDTV World Summit 2025. Agarkar addressed questions regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup and explained the recent omission of veteran pacer Mohammad Shami from the national squad.

Uncertain Futures for Kohli and Rohit

When asked about the highly anticipated question of whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be part of India’s 2027 World Cup squad, Agarkar maintained a cautious approach. “Two years from now, it is difficult to say what the situation will be,” he stated. The uncertainty about Sharma and Kohli’s inclusion in the squad remains, without any direct confirmation or rejection.

Agarkar maintained a balanced approach in his responses without revealing too much about the selection panel’s plans. He also addressed speculation regarding trials for the seasoned players: “It would be a bit silly to put them on trial in every game.” He added that their selection will be based on broad strategic assessments rather than short-term performance metrics. Despite Kohli and Sharma’s recent retirements from both Test and T20Is, Agarkar highlighted that both players remain important for India’s cricketing plans; however, their fitness and form will play a pivotal role.

Mohammad Shami’s Exclusion

Mohammad Shami’s exclusion from India’s white-ball tour of Australia was another hot topic discussed at the summit. Agarkar clarified that the veteran’s omission was entirely due to ongoing fitness concerns. Agarkar bluntly stated, “If Shami was fit, he’d be in the team.”

The veteran bowler had publicly questioned the selectors' decision, despite actively participating in domestic cricket for Bengal as proof of his fitness. In response, Agarkar said, “If he says that… I might give him a call.”

Agarkar settled some debates while leaving certain questions strategically unanswered. One thing is clear: the selection committee is prioritizing fitness and long-term strategy as India gears up for the upcoming 2027 World Cup.
