Abu Dhabi, September 14, 2025 — Sri Lanka, with a dominant all-round performance to, beat Bangladesh by six wickets in their Asia Cup 2025, Group B encounter at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium. This victory gave Sri Lanka their first win of the tournament and a strong push in the group standings.

Bangladesh Batting Struggles

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field first. In the first innings, Bangladesh managed to score 139/5 in 20 overs. Bangladesh saw an early collapse. They lost their openers in the initial overs. Parvez Hossain and Tanzid Hasan have gone for ducks.

Litton Das, however, showed some resilience while scoring 28 runs off 26, including boundaries. His wicket was a crucial one for Sri Lanka. Their middle order collapsed. Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain played important knocks, adding 41runs and 42 runs respectively while remaining not out.

Nissanka Leads Sri Lanka’s Chase

From Sri Lanka’s bowling unit, Wanindu Hasaranga picked up important wickets. He also got out Litton Das. Dushmantha Chameera and others were good with the new ball. Sri Lanka was confident in its chase. Pathum Nissanka played a composed knock and hit a half-century that made the chase easier. Kusal Mendis threw his wicket to Mustafizur Rahman while Kamil Mishara remained unbeaten and scored 46 runs and made it to the victory side. The Lankan batters were effective, rotating the strike, and on the other side, Bangladesh dropped chances.

Bangladesh’s Bowling Woes

Bangladesh bowlers failed to maintain constant pressure. Despite using six bowlers, Bangladesh could not create enough breakthroughs. Tanzim Hasan Sakib bowled with good pace but gave some boundaries in the powerplay. Mustafizur gave 35runs for 1 wicket. M. Hassan took 2 wickets. Fielding errors added to Bangladesh’s problems, with two dropped catches in the deep. Lack of runs made it difficult for the bowlers to defend, and it was an easy win for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka finished at 143/3 in 14.4 overs.

Pathum Nissanka was made Player of the Match for his elegant knock that made the chase smoother. This victory marks Sri Lanka’s first win of the Asia Cup 2025 and gives them a strong start in Group B. Sri Lanka needs to evaluate their middle order, which is a matter of concern. And also to finish the death overs without losing the momentum. For Bangladesh, the issues were clear: another top-order collapse, lack of partnerships in the middle overs, and inconsistent bowling. Sri Lanka will next face Pakistan, which will be a high-stakes match. Bangladesh now faces Oman in their do-or-die match to keep their campaign alive.
