Indian cricket legend Ravichandran Ashwin, one of the finest off-spinners of his generation, has officially retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Known for his sharp mind, variations, and consistency, Ashwin leaves behind a legacy that shaped modern-day franchise cricket.

The 39-year-old, who represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 after being bought for ₹ 9.75 crore, confirmed  his decision on X(formerly Twitter)

"They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today". Ashwin wrote.

Gratitude to IPL and Franchises

Ashwin expressed heartfelt thanks to the BCCI, IPL Management, and all franchises he played for, appreciating the friendships and opportunities across his career. "I would like to thank all the franchisees for the wonderful memories and relationships over the years", he added.

This announcement follows his international retirement earlier in the year during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, making it a double farewell from Indian cricket.

A Glory of IPL journey

Ashwin started his IPL career with CSK in 2009, playing a crucial role in the early title wins. Over the years, he also represented Rising Pune Supergiants, Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, before returning to Chennai in 2025 .

Across more than 200 matches, he picked over 170 wickets, making him one of the most successful spinners in league history.

Ashwin's exit marks the end of an era but not his cricketing journey. The off-spinner has confirmed that he will continue exploring opportunities in the global T20I leagues, ensuring fans can still witness his brilliance beyond the IPL.
