Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener and the current head coach of the Indian cricket team, has finally broken his silence about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in the national ODI team. In the recent interview, Gambhir acknowledged the extensive experience and talent that both Kohli and Sharma bring to the table. Irrespective of the praises, Gambhir narrowly avoided any assurance about the duo's qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup, leaving the fans both confused and disheartened.

Ghambir made his intentions clear, stating that he would rather focus on the present and take the future as it comes: “The 2027 World Cup is 2.5 years away. It is important to stay in the present.” Even though Gambhir has not guaranteed the seats to Sharma and Kohli yet, he has not dismissed it either, giving a ray of hope to the fans. “I’ve always said one thing: if you keep performing, then age is just a number.” He further emphasized that ultimately it is the form, performance, fitness, and contribution to the team that would be the deciding factors, not just the glory of past reputation.

The head coach of ICT also clarified about his role in the team selection: “I have no role in selection; selectors pick the team, and the coach picks the playing eleven. Till the time they are performing, they should be part of the team.” While Gambhir’s pragmatic views may have sown some seeds of doubt, the love and admiration of Rohit and Kohli’s fans remain unwavering, dreaming of witnessing this legendary pair together on the field of the 2027 World Cup, perhaps for one last time.
