The India vs Australia ODI series 2025 is scheduled to take place from October 19 to October 25, and Cricket Australia’s selection committee has announced the Australian squad for the ODI and T20 series against India. The good news is that the 2nd-highest wicket-taker, Mitchell Starc, is returning to the series after a short break. The committee confirmed that Mitchell Marsh would continue as captain in Pat Cummins absence due to his back injury. With just a few days left, Australia is entering the field with great expectations.
Mitchell Starc Returns to Action
Australia is fully set to face India in their home ODI series. Veteran left-arm quick Mitchell Starc's return to the team after a brief break gives the team more spirit. He had a remarkable career in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He has played 127 ODIs and taken 244 at an average of 23.40, maintaining an economy rate of 5.26. He is the fastest bowler in ODI history to reach 150 and 200 wickets. After his retirement from T20 internationals, he focuses on the longer formats. He last appeared in an ODI in November 2024 against Pakistan at Adelaide.
Pat Cummins Ruled Out; Mitchell Marsh Retains Captaincy
Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins will miss the upcoming white-ball series against India due to stress in his lower back. Therefore, Mitchell Marsh will continue as captain for both the ODI and T20I series against India. Australia Cricket confirmed that Pat will miss the match in India and New Zealand. Australian Coach Andrew McDonald has supported Mitchell Marsh's captaincy. He was the vice-captain of Australia’s white-ball team, and he has taken charge of the team in both ODIs and T20Is during Cummins’ injury.
Challenges Ahead for Australia
Australia added three other players to the ODI squad: Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Short, and Mitchell Owen. Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne dropped from both the ODI and T20 squads. The return of pace attacker, Starc, will boost the team, but the absence of Cummins could affect the series. However, Australia should consider their workload, captaincy, and adaptation when playing against a world number one cricket team.
