Pragyan Ojha is all set to be inducted as a member of the selection committee of the Indian senior men’s cricket team. On Friday, the BCCI published applications for senior men's, women's, and junior men's selection committees on their official website.
There are two positions in the men's senior selection committee, which is headed by Ajit Agarkar; this committee will be responsible for selecting the senior team across formats - Tests, One-Day, and T-20 internationals, and any other format decided by the BCCI. The eligibility requirements for this role: a candidate must have played at least 7 Test matches, or 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs, along with 20 first-class matches. Additionally, the candidate must have retired from the game at least five years ago and should not have served on the BCCI committee for more than five years in total.
Ojha to Represent South Zone, Replacing S. Sharath
According to TOI reporter Gaurav Gupta, the former Indian left-arm spinner is all set to become a selector from the South Zone and will replace S. Sharath, whose tenure comes to an end. According to Express Sports, Ajeet Agarkar and Ajay Ratra, representing the West Zone and East Zone, respectively, have retained their positions until 2026. SS Das or Subrato Banerjee - one of them will be replaced by someone from the central zone.
Pragyan Ojha, who was born in Odisha in 1986, represented three different teams in domestic circuits, Hyderabad, Bengal, and Bihar, and took 424 wickets in 108 first-class matches. In Test cricket, he has taken 113 wickets in 24 matches; in ODIs, he has taken 21 wickets in 18 matches. In IPL, he took 89 wickets in 92 matches and also won a purple cap in 2010 by representing Deccan Chargers Hyderabad.
Changes Expected in Women’s Selection Committee
According to Cricbuzz, in the women's selection committee, four out of the five positions, including the chairperson, Nitu David, a former spinner of the women's team, have completed their terms. Only Shyama Dey Shaw, the fifth member, will continue on the panel. The committee will be responsible for the selection of the senior women of Team India across formats and age groups, and the responsibilities also involve assessing coaches and support staff, drafting evaluation reports, and building solid bench strength. The eligibility criteria for this role were that the candidate should have represented India, must have retired from the game five years earlier, and must not have been a member of the BCCI committee for more than five years in total.
Junior Selection Committee: Role and Eligibility
The one position in the junior selection committee team, a junior cricket committee member will oversee the selection of the age-group teams (up to under 22) for campus tours and tournaments. The position also entails conducting junior tournaments, appointing captains and supporting staff, and instilling ethical values among youth players. The eligibility criteria for this position are 25 first-class matches of experience, having been retired from the game five years earlier, and not having been a member of the BCCI committee for more than five years in total. S.Sharath will join this position, according to TOI.
