The BCCI official told the two stalwarts of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, that they have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy to remain eligible for selection for the 2027 World Cup beyond the Australian series. According to Danik Jagaran's Abhishek Tripathi, the BCCI contacted Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and District Delhi Cricket Association (DDCA) officials, asking them to prepare for the duo’s participation in a domestic 50-over tournament.
BCCI is prioritising the transition phase before the 2027 ODI World Cup, with only nine ODIs scheduled before the next IPL. Rohit played his last Vijay Hazare match in 2018, and Kohli has been absent since 2010. BCCI wants Rohit and Virat to maintain their match fitness. It seems like Australia’s tour will be their final outing if they do not commit to play the domestic tournament.
The move followed Rohit's replacement as ODI captain by Shubman Gill, with Shreyas Iyer named as Vice-captain. There was a speculation that Australia’s tour would be a farewell tour for both stars, but this decision has built new stories. The selectors' mood suggests that they want to prepare a future squad.
