New York, August 24, 2025 - Defending champion and world number one Aryna Sabalenka began her campaign for the US Open 2025 very much in command, defeating Rebeka Masarova of Spain 7-5, 6-1 in the first round at Flushing Meadows. After the hard-fought start, the Belarusian settled into her rhythm and powered through to make it a straight-sets win.
Masarova pressed Sabalenka fiercely throughout most of the first set, being even until 5–5 when Sabalenka struck at a most crucial moment with a break. She finished the set with much better assurance. The second set turned into a completely different ball game-and the defending champion, with her heavy groundstrokes and consistent serving, ran away to victory in a little over 90 minutes.
In terms of stats, Sabalenka controlled the match from the start. She hit 63.9 percent of her first serves and won close to 80 percent of those points, remaining solid under pressure by saving five out of the six break points against her. Masarova had her chances but couldn't convert, while Sabalenka took advantage of hers to keep the upper hand.
A positive start for Sabalenka, who will strive to become the first woman to defend the US Open title since Serena Williams. She has performed quite well in other majors this season, putting her in a strong position to extend her supremacy in New York.
