Indian pace-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur has expressed his desire to claim the No. 8 all-rounder role in India’s ODI squad as preparations begin for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. Thakur’s statement indicates his aspiration to return to India’s limited-overs setup and strengthens his case in front of the selectors.

Targeting the No. 8 Role

Thakur’s recent performances with both bat and ball have boosted his chances of making a comeback. He believes the conditions in South Africa, where the 2027 World Cup will be hosted, will favor pace-bowling all-rounders who can contribute in the lower order.

“It’s important for me to keep performing and eventually return to the Indian team. Good performances will help me in selection. The ODI World Cup is in South Africa, so there might be a place for a bowling all-rounder at No. 8. I am eyeing that spot,” Thakur said after Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh.

The 34-year-old added that he is fully prepared for international cricket: “My preparation is such that if tomorrow I am asked to play, I am ready for that.” (Source: TOI)

Consistent Performances in Domestic and International Cricket

The 34-year-old Thakur has had a successful career in ODIs. His past performances have displayed his all-round capability, delivering match-winning performances in both batting and bowling. In domestic cricket, Thakur has been in spectacular form in the Ranji Trophy and IPL. According to his previous ODIs, he has played 47 matches and taken 65 wickets at an average of 30.98 with an economy rate of 6.22.

His best figures stand at 4 for 37. Thakur’s contribution with the bat is also notable, having scored a high of 50*. Currently, he is leading Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, and his leadership experience shows that he is “ready anytime” for an India call-up and is focused on reclaiming the No. 8 bowling all-rounder spot.

What Lies Ahead

In modern-day ODIs, the No. 8 all-rounder position is crucial for team balance. India has frequently struggled to find a consistent all-rounder. For Thakur, securing a spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup won’t be easy. He will face competition from top players like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and Washington Sundar, who are also fighting for all-rounder roles. His fitness will also be taken into consideration. However, his experience and skills are an advantage for him to be a part of the national white-ball team.
