Team India’s victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground came with a worrying moment after Shreyas Iyer sustained a rib injury while taking a breathtaking catch during the third and final ODI against Australia.

The incident unfolded in the 33rd over of the Australian innings. On the fourth ball from Harshit Rana, Alex Carey attempted to slap a short delivery down the ground, but the ball took a top edge and flew toward deep third. Iyer sprinted back with precision, kept his eyes fixed on the ball, and completed a full-length tumbling catch, one that will be remembered as one of the finest in the series.

However, the brilliance came at a cost. As Iyer hit the turf, he immediately clutched his left rib cage, visibly in pain. Teammates rushed toward him while the Indian physio attended to him on the field. Iyer was later seen walking off the ground alongside the medical staff and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment.

The BCCI confirmed: “Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.”

At the time of the injury, it was uncertain whether Iyer would return to bat. India, however, maintained control of the match, driven by a solid top-order performance.

Rohit and Kohli Steer India to Victory

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ensured there were no further hiccups as they built a commanding partnership. Rohit went on to score his 33rd ODI century, his 50th in international cricket, while Kohli notched another fluent half-century. Their stand powered India to a comfortable win, sealing the series in style.

Despite the victory, the focus now shifts to Iyer’s recovery. With key tournaments approaching, the management will be cautious about rushing him back, especially given his previous back injury issues.
