Shubman Gill, after proving himself in the IPL and Test captaincy, is ready to embark on the journey of ODI captaincy. Apart from his debut as ODI captain, Gill is in a unique position where he will not only share the dressing room with two of the country’s cricketing legends, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but will also lead them. From learning from this veteran to leading them, Gill has come a long way. This transition symbolizes the leadership convergence and portrays the ICT strategy for the next ODI World Cup, which is two years ahead.
Despite the surrounding speculation about the leadership change, Gill clarified that his relationship with the two veterans remains the same. “I think the narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as it was before, and that is very helpful."
The 26-year-old skipper admitted that both Sharma and Kohli are his go-to people when it comes to advice on the field. "I have a very good relationship with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai. Whenever I have a doubt about anything, I go to them, take their suggestions, and seek their advice, and they never hesitate to tell me anything. See, I think that's the real wealth of experience."
Looking ahead, Gill hopes to further contribute to the rich legacy of ODI. "Definitely, very exciting. Big shoes for me to fill in to carry forward the legacy of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. So many experiences and so many learnings I have had."
With Shubman Gill’s consistent performance throughout the formats, his strong captaincy, and his genuine rapport with the veterans, it seems that ODI has got its new promising captain, one which holds the potential to add new chapters of glory to an already enriched history.
