Just another twist at the US Open: Marketa Vondrousova, advancing in the draw to the Round of 16, knocked out Jasmine Paolini in the third round, winning 7-6(4), 6-1.
The first set was also a fierce tussle between Paolini's power and Vondrousova's variety. It resulted in a tiebreak, and the Czech managed to hold her nerve and take it, 7-4.
From there, she took over, keeping Paolini guessing with angles and smart shot selection, and then breezed through the second set 6-1 to give her a direct win within just more than one hour.
This is a bad loss for Paolini, who has had a solid year but also reminds Vondrousová of the Grand Slam pedigree. Victory just fuels further insurrection within the drama unfolding in New York.
