Grandstand witnessed a fiery clash between Hong Kong's Chak Lam Wong and Andrey Rublev as he tested the patience of Rublev and extended the match to a thrilling five-set battle. Wong had stunned the audience when by taking the lead of the opening set by 6-2, and this had forced a decider when he levelled the two sets apiece. Rublev, on the other hand, banked on experience and calm and composure as he sealed the match with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the next round. In a post-match interview, Rublev admitted, "He played amazing tennis today. I had to dig really deep. Matches like this remind you that nothing comes easy at a Slam.” Wong, however, got a standing ovation as he competed against one of the world's best.
Sinner Overcomes Shapovalov with Composed Comeback
Meanwhile, in another match in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, none other than Jannik Sinner displayed a clinical performance against Denis Shapovalov by securing a very smooth victory, which reflected in the scores 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6. Shapovalov was in a fiery mood from the first set onwards as she sealed victory by 5-7, but from the second set, the situation changed as Sinner took control using his baseline control and different tactics, which ultimately helped him win. The third and fourth sets were almost in Sinner's control as he was almost and at this point, Shapovalov became inconsistent with her performance and which helped Sinner. “I stayed calm after losing the first set and trusted my game plan,” Sinner said after the match in an interview said “Denis played aggressively, but I knew if I stayed solid, my chances would come.”
Shapovalov said she lost momentum after the first set and made a lot of errors in judgment, which led to the loss. “I started strong, but couldn’t maintain that level. Jannik is a top player and showed why.”
